The 2017 Royal Rumble is one month away. It’s one of the big 4 and always a PPV fans look forward to due to the Royal Rumble match itself. Anything goes and anything can happen. Surprise debuts, shocking eliminations & temporary alliances. This is all a part of the Royal Rumble as whoever wins gets a main event title shot at WrestleMania. Although it hasn’t been confirmed by WWE, but with their being a brand split in place we can only assume that whoever wins the rumble, will get their choice of championship to contest for. So let’s get to the list of 5 superstars who could potentially win the 2017 Royal Rumble.

Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho has had an outstanding career in professional wrestling, and especially in WWE. Jericho has had perhaps one of the best years to date in his career. He hasn’t won any championships, but his character has been perfection. Jericho has pretty much done everything he possibly can in WWE. However, the one thing he hasn’t accomplished is to win the Royal Rumble match.

Could this be his year? Jericho has been involved with Kevin Owens in their storyline for the past many months and it’s been great to watch. They both play well off of each other. However, it’s been hinted many a times now on RAW that Jericho will turn on Owens. The past month we thought it had happened, especially at Roadblock, as Jericho attacked Owens. However, we found out that was merely to disqualify him and save him the championship.

Jericho could potentially win the Royal Rumble and finally turn on Owens. Challenging for the Universal Title at WrestleMania, Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens is the rivalry we all want to see now. Jericho has played his bad guy character so damn well this past year, he has been awesome and after the career he has had, he deserves that final accomplishment of winning the Royal Rumble match.

I see this potentially going down one way. Owens either helps or hinders Jericho in the Rumble, but in the end Jericho stands tall and eliminates the last opponent. Resulting in a staredown, Jericho in a trance towards Owens’ Universal Championship. This is where the rivalry begins. No matter what happens in the Rumble, Chris Jericho will have his part to play and him winning would tick off one of his last accomplishments yet to be achieved in WWE. Jericho definitely stands a chance of becoming the last man standing at The Royal Rumble and making his way to WrestleMania with a championship match.

John Cena

Cena, already a 2 time Royal Rumble match winner, has the chance to make it a triple. He is already facing AJ Styles for the WWE Championship, but if he falls short, he has the opportunity to get back in the main event of WrestleMania. Love him or hate him, John Cena has a very mixed reaction, quite like Roman Reigns, when he makes his way down that ramp to the ring. Firing Cena up to perform his best, and if he fails to win the title from AJ, then you can guarantee he’s gonna show up in the Rumble match and kick some ass as only he does.

Cena winning would provide for a great story. Providing AJ doesn’t lose the championship before WrestleMania, it would be pretty certain it would be Cena Vs. AJ at WrestleMania. Cena has never beat AJ & Cena is one championship reign from equalling Ric Flair’s record of 16 world title reigns.

I believe Cena has a good chance of winning the rumble again, although he probably will receive a mixed reaction from fans. No-one knows what’s going to happen, as the Rumble is always so unpredictable, but if Cena makes an appearance, then you can be damn sure he will ‘Never Give Up’ as he always says. Unlike other superstars, Cena doesn’t need another Royal Rumble win, he won’t lose any momentum going forward but the fact he will have another opportunity to tie Ric Flair’s record, and finally get a win over AJ Styles is definitely a good enough reason in my books.

The Undertakers legacy is WrestleMania. We all know how shocking it was when Brock Lesnar defeated him, and defeated the streak. We can complain as much as we want, it happened, it’s done we have to move on. We haven’t seen The Undertaker since the special 900th episode of SmackDown live. Taker stated that WrestleMania no longer defines him, implicating he will be around more often. Yet still no appearance.

Undertaker definitely needs to make an appearance at the Rumble, and has a great chance of winning. Undertaker won the 2007 Royal Rumble, and 10 years later he could relive that victory with another. Now, the only question is, if Taker wins and gets his title opportunity, who does he face? Personally AJ Styles vs Undertaker is an absolute dream match. Two superstars who have never before faced each other. Their two contrasting wrestling styles, vying for the top title in WWE. Without a doubt a dream match.

Yet again, if Cena takes the victory in his title match at the rumble, and Taker wins the Rumble match, we could see another potential dream match in Cena vs Taker. Although we don’t know anything for sure, it is heavily rumoured WrestleMania will now be the Undertakers last. If it is he needs to go out in fashion so either Cena or AJ would be perfect opponents for him. If Taker does win, I personally hope he wins the title, after his lengthy career in WWE I would love to see him get one last run before he moves on from his wrestling life. The 2017 Royal Rumble match is really going to be so unpredictable, as there are a lot of candidates who could potentially win it this year, more than the past few years.

Braun Strowman

Braun Strowman is a monster. No matter what happens at the rumble, Braun Strowman will be a world champion sooner or later. Braun has been on a path of destruction lately, destroying anything or anyone getting in his way. It’s getting to the point now where we are questioning who will actually be able to defeat Braun Strowman? If he went up against Kevin Owens for the championship, it’s possible Owens may not even survive the onslaught from Braun, let alone keep hold of his title.

Braun has had a great year in 2016, yet 2017 looks to be an even brighter year, without a doubt he is going to be a champion. Can he make that happen by winning the rumble. Out of the 5 superstars in this list, Braun has the most chance of winning. He is undefeated and the only way I see Braun not winning the rumble is if everyone in that ring works together to eliminate him.

I wouldn’t like to go face to face with Braun Strowman, I’d be scared for my life, and so you should be. After seeing what he is capable of. Strowman could easily attain the highest number of eliminations in the match, and I don’t see him having a problem doing that. Anyone who gets in Braun’s way, pretty much gets destroyed, and yes I will admit it’s very fun to watch.

Samoa Joe

Who else to make a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble match than Samoa Joe. The 2 time NXT Champion could very well surprise us all and debut on the main roster (preferably SmackDown) and come out victorious. Let’s not forget, Samoa Joe is no walkover. He is one of the best wrestlers on the roster and he is a tough monster to go up against. If he enters the Rumble, you better be prepared as it’s gonna feel more like a battlefield than a wrestling ring.

There is a high chance of Samoa Joe getting called up, to make his debut in the Royal Rumble. He has pretty much accomplished everything he can in NXT right now and needs to move on to the main roster. I feel he is only still in NXT because he still has that star power, let’s not forget, NXT is a developmental brand, Samoa Joe doesn’t need to develop anymore and can truly be a monster on the SmackDown brand.

Also, the history Samoa Joe has had in TNA with AJ Styles is monumental, Samoa Joe vs AJ Styles has been seen many a times, but never in WWE. Winning the Rumble and coming after AJ for his championship belt is a realistic scenario that could play out. It’s one I would love to see. Everyone knows Samoa Joe and what he is capable off, if he does make a surprise appearance he is for sure in with a definite chance of winning the Rumble, and another defining moment in his career.

The 2017 Royal Rumble is already looking to be a great PPV. Hosted in San Antonio, with a 70,000 seat capacity in the Alamadome, this year is sure to be a historic one. There’s a few things we can be certain of with the rumble. There will be surprise appearances, there will be shocking eliminations and especially this year, it’s pretty difficult to determine who is going to win. I believe the 5 superstars listed above are the potential favourites to leave the Rumble with a Championship title shot at WrestleMania. However, let’s not forget we still have the likes of Dean Ambrose, The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Orton & Wyatt, Cesaro & a ton of others who could potentially swerve us and win.

The unpredictability of this year’s rumble is an exciting prospect, but whoever wins has got to give us a great main event title bout at WrestleMania. Roman Vs. Triple H this year was not worthy of closing the show.
