Let’s Talk About- Smackdown 12.21.2016

Well, good news everybody! Smackdown was actually worth watching! So I did! Just for you!

Match 1: James Ellsworth vs. AJ Styles (C) for the WWE Championship

Recap: Good news again! We got a squash and a burial of James Ellsworth. AJ finally got to beat the tar out of Ellsworth. He beat him quick and clean. I loved the big fight feel they still gave this at the beginning. This was a perfect payoff, as we got to see how much better AJ is, and later in the night we move James into something new. What he and Carmella is going to be doing together, the world may never know. Lovely squash! Also, we immediately get the story of the night and that was Ziggler and Baron getting involved after the match and Ziggler puts his contendership up against Baron in the main event.

Your Winner and STILL WWE Champion: AJ Styles

Match 2: Apollo Crews vs. The Miz (C) for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

Recap: I pretty good match between the two. It was all Apollo early, which the Miz having to powder to recompose himself. After the break we see Miz get a little but of the upper hand. Maryse tries to get involved and is thrown out. Miz is hit with a nice looking deadlift German suplex. Apollo goes for his finisher but he is poked in the eye and hit with the Skull Crushing Finale for the 1…2…3! After the match he is interviewed by Renee Young. She asks about his obsession with Dean, to which Miz points out that she is the one obsessed considering she is the one that is sleeping with Dean. Renee did a good job of acting shocked and then she slapped Miz. Good stuff, though I am not sure I needed this brought up in story.

Your Winner and STILL Intercontinental Champion: The Miz

Natalya comes out, grovels to Nikki, Carmella comes out and we end up having Natalya admit she attacked Nikki. So this was stupid.

Bryan and Alexa backstage. Alexa tells Bryan that she hopes Becky’s punishment for injuring her last week is a good one. Bryan says it was and tells her that he gave her a rematch for the title next week. Alexa is mad, but Bryan informs her that he talked with the trainers and knows that she is fine. Alexa storms off, as Bryan tells her how well her leg was looking right then.

Match 3: Dean Ambrose vs. Luke Harper

Recap: Match started during the break…ok? We got a Torture Rack by Harper, with the Luger taunt before it! A really good spot in this match saw Dean get knocked around, it looked like he was going to do his rebound lariat onto Luke, however, Luke turns like he is going to clothesline him out of his boots and Dean never rebounded. What made this work was that Luke looked like he missed an opportunity. Ending sees Dean cradle Luke for the victory out of nowhere. Immediately we see Dean get beat down by Randy and Bray. Bray and Randy do the Sister Abigail into the RKO to leave Dean lying. Once the lights come back up we see the Miz come down to confront Ambrose. Miz gets into the ring and hits the Skull Crushing Finale. Not sure why we destroyed Ambrose, but it is leading to a match i want to see.

Your Winner: Dean Ambrose

Match 4: Alexa Bliss vs. La Luchadora

Recap: Squash! Just kidding. We see not Becky Lynch do a bunch of Luchadore spots. We get a bodyscissors roll around the ring. Alexa starts to take the opponent seriously, but ends up being rolled into the Disarmer by Becky…I mean La Luchadora. Alexa had to tap out as La Luchadora celebrates around ringside. We see La Luchadora doing the most respectful thing a Luchadora can do, and that is reveal her identity…OH MY GGOOOOOODDDD! It was Becky all along!

Your Winner: La Luchadora

Ryan Phillipe is backstage doing nothing, but we did get a set up for Mojo vs. Curt Hawkins

Match 5: Mojo Rawley vs. Curt Hawkins

20161220_sd_mojo-3fd50f80374115b5e549a9e6ac11b4d1Recap: A nothing match with a forearm in the corner as a finisher for Mojo…Ok?

Your Winner: Mojo Rawley

Match 6: Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin for the Number One Contendership to the WWE Championship

Recap: What can I say? Ziggler sells, sells, sells. Baron has big man offense, offense, offense. We got an OK match between these two. Baron is getting better, but there is still a lot for him to figure out. AJ on commentary was the highlight of this match. AJ calling out Baron for giving him the lazy eye. Ending sees both men on the outside brawling. We get Ziggler thrown into AJ. Super Kick by Ziggler onto Baron as the ref calls for the bell. AJ then attacks both men with the chair. Bryan comes out and tells AJ that next week there will be a Triple Threat match, or rather a triple Thet match next week for AJ WWE title.

Your Winner: No Contest but both are awarded the title shot next week

Show Overall: While not the most exciting show, this show did continue the storylines without feeling like a filler. I loved that each segment meant something. Even with Ryan Phillippe, the backstage segment was to build to the Mojo/Hawkins match. I would say a job done this week and a await the stacked show next week. While RAW is phoning it in for the year, Smackdown is setting up a year ending finale that we should check out. So…

Until Next Time,
