Main Card

We open up early with HBK in the ring. He was out strictly to get us pumped up for the event tonight. It worked!

Match 1 Bayley vs. Charlotte (c) for the WWE RAW Women’s Championship

Recap: Bayley has been working the core as we saw a little six-pack going! Charlotte looked like she raided Ric’s closet with that exquisite, blue robe. I would like to ask Cole something, how/why would Serena Williams start calling herself the Charlotte Flair of tennis, when in fact she has been winning grand slam titles years before Charlotte was even wrestling? Bayley is all over Charlotte early. She necks Charlotte across the rope and hits a baseball slide headscissors on the outside. We then see Bayley come off Bret’s rope and hit a crossbody onto Charlotte. Charlotte takes over and after chopping Bayley in the corner we get a long chinlock. Story of the match saw Charlotte trying to work a slow, methodical style while Bayley keep the tempo of the match high. Bayley comes off the top with an elbow drop but couldn’t put Charlotte away. Charlotte fought back and got the Figure Eight onto Bayley, sort of, but Bayley reversed it, only to see Charlotte reverse it back and get the ropes behind the ref’s back. Ref does finally break up the hold. Charlotte hit the Natural Selection on the apron and won…it came out of fucking nowhere and it didn’t feel like the finish. Good match, good opener, but I wish these two were allowed to go a little longer as they had the crowd still.

Your Winner and STILL WWE RAW Women’s Champion: Charlotte

Match 2: Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens (c) for the WWE Universal Championship (Chris Jericho in a Shark Cage)

Recap: We start with all three men in the ring. Chris and Kevin put the boots to Roman to start everything off. Roman gets rid of Kevin and runs Chris into the shark cage and ultimately gets him into it. Cage is hoisted up and Kevin and Roman go at it. Almost immediately we see a walk and brawl in the crowd. Back at ringside and Kevin throws Reigns into the steps and pulls out  multiple chairs out and sets them up to throw Roman through it. Kevin goes to powerbomb Roman through the chairs but he is blocked. Roman tries to suplex Kevin through the chair, but alas no one went through them…yet. Roman gets a table but he is cut off by Kevin. Kevin removes the table and goes for another cannonball but takes too long because he used Roman taunt in the corner. Drive-by onto Kevin and we get another tease of the table. Kevin sets Roman up on the table and hits a Frog splash through the table and it looked like he murdered Roman. Kevin found more chairs and sent them into the ring. Chair to the back gets a 2. We see a chair get wedged into the corner and after a lot of back and forth we see Kevin send Roman head first into the chair. Jericho has some brass knuckles and send it down to Kevin. Kevin mocks Roman again with his taunt, and eventually hits the brass knuckle shot which still wasn’t enough to put Roman away. Kevin tries a powerbomb through a set up chair but Roman puts him through it with a Samoan drop. ROman set up a table in the corner but this allows Kevin to roll Roman up for a 2. Superman punch sees Kevin have enough time to kick out. Roman goes for the spear but Kevin blocks it and it the Stone Cold Stunner for a long 2 count of his own. Kevin goes back to the stack of chairs and tries to super-plex Roman through the chairs. Superman punch by Roman and Kevin goes through the chairs quiet nastily. Roman goes to drag Kevin back in but sees the table. Entranced by the table he turns his attention away from Kevin and undresses the table and sends Kevin through the table. Roman goes for the spear but Braun comes out and chokeslams Roman onto the German announce table. He sends Roman into the ring and powerslams him through a table allowing Kevin to get the 1…2…3!

Your Winner and STILL WWE Universal Champion: Kevin Owens

We get Sami backstage and get picks his number with a little ha-ha. Dean comes in and is too cool for school. I did like that Dean asked Zayn if he wanted him to open Sami’s pick for him. Zayn agree and Dean tells him 8, but it was upside down and says actually it was…8. They tells Sami that he isn’t going to open his up because he didn’t want to ruin the surprise.

Match 3: Neville vs. Rich Swann for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship

Recap: Rich takes Neville outside early. Slow, plodding match sees Neville put his foot across the back of Swann’s neck. Neville goes for the RIngs of Saturn but Swann gets the rope. They started it off slow and brought it down a little. Crowd just didn’t care because Swann’s hope spot came way too late. Neville throws Swann into the barricade, but the crowd just doesn’t care. Neville comes off the top with the flying nothing and is Superkicked but Swann couldn’t make a cover. Crowd still doesn’t care. Swann hits a standing hurricanrana and then the Phoenix Splash and the crowd finally start interacting. Neville is sent back off the top but he flips and lands. Rich comes off and then kicks him in the gut. Neville is hit with Swann’s “Oh, there it is!” but Neville is too close to the ropes. Neville with the top rope super-plex and then locks in the Rings, Neville wrenches back and Swann had to tap. Match wasn’t bad then just took too long getting to a hope spot and the crowd tuned out.

Your Winner and NEW Cruiserweight Champion: Neville

Match 4: John Cena vs. AJ Styles (c) for the WWE Championship

Recap: We circle and lock up but then we see John hit a huge shoulder block and it looked like he tweaked his knee. He aggressively sent AJ to the other corner and we see him down with AJ taking advantage. AA attempt is reverse and AJ returns to the offense. Early on what we saw was Aj and John reversing signature moves, more AJ than John. John goes for the 5-Knuckle Shuffle but AJ pops up, Cena goes for the punch but he is kicked by AJ. AJ avoids the super-plex and gets John up in the Torture Rack position and does a spin out powerbomb. Cena with the AA but AJ gets his shoulder up at the last second. Cena flexes it out and waits for AJ to get up. HUGE clothesline by Cena. As the match went on the smirk seemed more menacing. He was growing frustrated by AJ and him well, never giving up. Pele kick by AJ and he hits the Phenomenal Forearm for a 2. AJ keeps kicking Cena in the chest as Cena struggled to catch his breath. John blocks a hurricanrana and get AJ up into the Electric Chair Drop knocking the wind out of AJ. Counter-fest into the Calf Crusher. Cena rolls out and locks in the STF. Aj rolls out and locks in the STF of his own. John gets to his feet and gets AJ up into the fireman’s carry but AJ gets up and tries to get away. Briefly, John looks like he would go for a Styles Clash but he locks in a FIgure Four, which was countered into a cross arm breaker. John hurks up and powerbombs AJ. Aj catches Cena going for the top rope leg drop and powerbombs him. Styles Clash by AJ but Cena gets his shoulder up. Aj goes for the 450 but runs into Cena’s knees. Cena hits the smoothest Code Red I have ever seen him hit. AJ hits the fireman’s carry into the neck breaker across the knee for a 2 once more. Cena hits, basically, a Big Ending for a 2, think it was supposed to be a cutter. Super-AA for Cena but he can’t put AJ away. Styles hits the Styles Clash and goes for the Phenomenal Forearm but John catches him, hits an AA, then he rolls through and hits another AA to capitalize the win for John’s 16th championship. Great match, these guys work so well together!

Your Winner and NEW WWE Champion: John Cena

Final Four: Chris Jericho v. Randy Orton v. Bray Wyatt v. Roman Reigns

We see Chris being fucked over the top by a Roman and Superman punched to the floor. We see Randy and Bray team up and take Roman out. Roman moves out of the Sister RKO. Roman reverses Randy, hits the Superman punch onto Bray and sends him out over the top. Spear attempt by Roman sees it turned into a RKO and Randy sends Roman out. Randy Orton is the winner of the 2017 Royal Rumble!

Your Winner: Randy Orton

Show Overall: I had a good time with this show. Did I like the Royal Rumble match? Yes! Am I left wondering and scratching my head about some of the booking decisions in that match? Yes, Oh god yes! The four main matches before the Rumble match were pretty good. Charlotte and Bayley put on a pretty good match, while we saw Neville and Swann give it a go, but they waited too long to get to the point and the crowd died out. I found myself loving the Kevin Owens and Roman match as it was a bit of a plunder fest that saw some wrestling during the spots. AJ and Cena was damn good. I know people get sick of the kick outs but at the end of the day I thought this match told the drama of John wanting to punk out AJ and AJ showing resilience throughout. Now I will be giving out to this if it ends up with Cena blowing AJ off and just going back to being happy-go-lucky John because that mean Cena beat a nobody and what does that say for Cena? Rumble match seeing Orton standing tall was fine if they are trying to tell the Wyatt story with a title on the line, however, if we are just setting up Randy Orton vs. John Cena for one last time then I am not sure this was something that was needed in 2017. Anyways I enjoyed it and I look forward to the fall out this week. So…

Until Next Time,
